Fishing the Neuse River out of Oriental, NC and New Bern, NC this past week.
The fishing this past week has been more like hunting than fishing. The fish we are targeting are in transition from Spring mode to Summer mode, along with strong winds from changing directions and a great deal of rain, the water is ever changing in clarity, depth and salinity. This makes it difficult to stay on fish from day to day. Some days are much better than others if you hit it just right and end up in a place where the fish are congregated in good water or on a biomass of bait. Find the bait and you will find the fish.
We have been using a variety of baits from hard baits to soft plastics to live bait. All have produced, but you still have to be in the right place.
This past week we have caught Stripers, Puppy Drum, Flounder, Trout, Bluefish, Spanish and even a Largemouth Bass. The fish still seem to be a bit scattered. There are schools of small trout to be found and also schools of puppy drum can also be found. The fishing will get better soon. We just need some stable water. At least that is my opinion.
Coming up: Tarpon in July and Old Drum in July, August and September. If you are interested in targeting these fish and would like to request a guide, please contact me. We can select a date and get after it.
